a nice little Victorian work, being a sweeping chronological history from the Phoenicians to the armour-plated ships of the mid-19th century, with a final chapter on 'modern eccentricities' - mostly torpedoes, and a final lamentation even at this early date of "Is England's Naval Prestige gone?"
