the author arrived in Panama in 1870 to serve on the Pacific Station, and this scarce book records his travels along the Pacific coast of North America to Vancouver Island, back to San Francisco, and then down the eastern seaboard of South America, with further excursions into Argentina and Brazil. More of a travelogue than a record of naval service, but none the less interesting for that
