the story of a wandering beggar in mid-19th century Scotland "one of the greatest and wittiest beggars who ever infested the streets of Glasgow" - a useful social history of the period and an entertaining read.
Indeed, 'The Buteman' newspaper declared "there is no laying down the book till it has been devoured"
