An original Assessed Taxes Return [blank]  for the year 1835, ending 25th May 1836, issued to Archibald McDonald of Ardnave, in the parish of Kilchoman, Isle of Islay.

single-fold folio sheet [40x25.5cm]. very good condition.

The printed form was issued to Archibald Campbell to assess the taxes due on articles [including servants, coachmen, and other persons classed as 'articles'] kept between 24th May 1834 and 25th May 1835.

Other 'articles' included carriages, horses, mules, dogs, armorial bearings, and of course, hair powder.

The return has not been completed, which would have made it more interesting, but still a scarce tax assessment survival from the early 19th century, and if you think present-day self assessment income tax returns are complex, just be glad you didn't need to fill in one of these!
