Barry was an early exponent of the investigative journalist genre, and visited the dockyards and shipyards unannounced, to provide a critical exposé of shipyard practices and the lack of government support.
Most of the yards visited were Thames or south coast based, but he also ventured north to the Laird shipyard in Birkenhead.
