an original paper extracted from the Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society. the introduction of iron diagonal bracing was one of Robert Seppings' lasting legacies in the improvement of the construction of the ships of the Royal Navy in the 19th century.

Seppings was knighted in 1819 and retained the position of Surveyor of the Navy from 1813 to 1832.
