one of the most sought after titles in the Scottish yachting literature. the book recounts six cruises in a 35-ton cutter yacht during the 1880's and 1890's around the Scottish coasts, the western isles, and Orkney and Shetland; plus an account of a voyage from Lerwick to Bergen.

The author was Inspector of Salmon Fisheries in Scotland during this period, and there is much useful information on the state of the fisheries.

the book contains 25 black & white vignette illustrations taken from the author's sketches; but is notable for the 16 plates, also reproduced from the author's sketches, each individually hand coloured.
