good clean crisp condition hardback in a full mottled calf binding, with some surface scuffing and wear to the spine. joints cracked but still firm. several ink marks to preliminaries and some pencil annotation. 2cm strip cut from top of title-page. blind stamp of the Royal School of Naval Architecture Library to title-page and half-title.
Goimpy joined the French navy in 1746. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Martinique in 1780 against the English fleet under Admiral Rodney, and commanded the 74-gun ship 'Destin' at the battle of Fort Royal in 1781, and Chesapeake Bay in 1782.
He published several books, of which this is his major work.
