a good example of an early 20th century Royal Navy Midshipman's journal, with the added interest that Midshipman Owen Jones served on board the battlecruiser HMS Lion, famous as Admiral Beatty's flagship at the Battle of Jutland.

The journal commences on 31st March 1919, with Jones on board HMS Lion at Scapa Flow. The ship remained at Scapa Flow till the end of April, then sailed to Rosyth, before embarking on a round Britain cruise, finishing with a voyage down the west coast to Plymouth.

Jones left HMS Lion in January 1920 and joined HMS Dublin (a  light cruiser also on active service at the Battle of Jutland).

HMS Dublin was based in the Mediterranean till December, and then sailed for West Africa, St.Helena, and on to South Africa, where she was based at Simonstown.

The journal finishes on the 22nd August 1921.

Written in a neat, legible hand, with the illustrations being the usual mix of well executed charts, maps, and technical drawings.
